I figured out the secret to reading scripts: skip all the scene description! I just read the dialogue, glancing at the narration just enough to know what was going on, and LOVE this. Love, love, love it.

Things I love: I love the rule of three that goes into it: talking to Monkey, Justin, and Annemarie about his identity and their different angles on it. I love that we get the scope of the comic laid out for us (rooftop lounging, dangerroom battles, lover's tiffs, a menacing con, a high-tech paladin, and humor). I love the amount that Maxwell is in it...not too much, not too little.

On to the next I go!

Re: Switchboard

Thanks, James.
I am always excited when people want to translate my ideas into a visual medium, whether it's pages, panels, character designs... or who knows what else.

I am currently looking to develop my own 4 comic book titles. I am an artist and have began writing the plots for 3 of my comic book titles. I want full control of the art and writing of my titles.
Anyways, I am wondering if you needed someone still to do some of your art. I am very busy with my own artwork and titles along with being a full time employee at a bank and attending school full time at night.
I am interested in maybe drawing character concepts for you and maybe do a page or panels when I can.
Do you still need an artist that can draw your characters?
You can contact me at Jamesbui87@gmail.com

Re: Deadline: Now

Wow!! really Good!!!
I would suggest a small change to the last two pages. Sort of merge the current page 24 and 25, so we're switching between Max coming up on Hourglass and Hourglass on the phone. Then just make the last page a slash of Max shutting her in the head. I think it'd be a great image to end on.

I like what's going on. It feels like we're building up steam. We'll have to chit chat about the scripts in person once I've caught up on them all.

I think every single time I went for the cheap shot, especially if I did it to please the readers, it worked against me. People actually pointed out that one scene and asked me: "What was that about? It doesn't make sense!"

It may work for King because he's King. Or maybe it happened to be a good contrast or something. If your story gives you a very good reason to go for the joke, it can work. But more often than not, it won't.

There's a reason why the best episodes of The Unit are usually Mamet's. (Or were, back when I watched it.)

Re: Happy Holi-delays!

uh its to depressing when it does...

Re: Rapid City goes PDF

On the one hand, I do like having all the "guts" out there on display.... But on the other hand, I prefer the more streamlined appearance of the PDF scripts.

Celtx does offer a PDF export, but for the comics format it is just awful. For some reason it changes into a thing that looks more like an Excel spreadsheet than a script. It could be functionally used, as all of the information is actually there, but it is far uglier than I would ever show off in public.

Re: Rapid City goes PDF

I've never used Project Central myself, so the peek you provided was more than interesting. The catalog and index card functions look intriguing. It could be a great tool. Of course, you don't need all that to present the scripts. And PDF has two major advantages for me as a reader: I can download and print the scripts.

What do you mean by "series of simple installs"? Doesn't Celtx offer PDF export anyway?

Re: Read and discuss Rapid City #1

It's interesting that your character evolves the same way your skills do in that first issue. I haven't looked at the later issues but I bet you've learned a lot. It's a little unfair for me to pick at Issue 1, I assumed your scripting gets stronger, but we begin at the beginning, right?

I'll look at your later scripts. By the way, it looks like you've got a great relationship with your penciller. Have you worked with other artists besides him?

-Mark

Re: Read and discuss Rapid City #1

Cooper. Thanks reading these scripts, I am glad you liked them.

I understand your comments, and I agree.
Especially with transition to the scene atthe bank.....that was just sloppy.

The first page, however, is a bit of a different story.

I know it is lame to nit-pick a criticism....so consider this me explaining where I am coming from and why that page looks the way it does.
This whole project is an experiment in just diving in. When I started writing it, I did not know what woudl happen or who it would happen to. I know what my general theme would be, but that was it.
That first page has no background, because I did not know what the background would be. And when the character laments "I need a name", that is actually me needing a name for that character.

That whole first page is the character talking about how hard it is to get started BEING a superhero without a name, but it is also me talking about how hard it is to start writing a superhero comic book without a name.

In fact, if you check out Issue 1 version 1 on the script page, you will see that his name was originally set to be "Rampart". The name "Kinetic" literally appeared on my keyboard as I was writing that conversation with Monkey.

Thanks again.
